NOWS is the newest addition to NONC’s roster of programs! We have an active program committee with volunteers with backgrounds in fisheries management and enforcement, water quality management, environmental education and other fields.
We are interested in supporting the health of all waterways in the North Okanagan. But, with a sockeye salmon return anticipated for Fall 2026 – the first in living memory - the group’s initial #1 goal is enhancement of Vernon Creek to aid potential spawning activity. The creek currently has several conditions that will work against a successful spawning event. These include high water temperatures, human and dog activity in some areas, obstructions by manmade and natural debris, abundant presence of large carp in various areas, and a lack of abundant, good quality spawning environment.
